Hi All,
Newbie here so please be kind!
I'm indecisive at the best of times, let alone a major 3 year game-changer like buying my first new car. Have spent a lot of time reading on the forum which is really helpful. Its a big decision for me and I'm still at a bit of a loose end as to what to do. Have a vw golf mk6 gt tdi 140. Its out of its warrantee and i do 20k miles per year, so want to get rid before a repair bill forces me to keep it longer. Have been dead set on a Mk7 GTD but thought 'd try out the competition first..
I test drove a Merc A class, like the outside but inside its a bit tacky and child like. Tried an A3 but didn't seem very comfortable, and I'm not really a A3 fan. My sister and mate drive a 1 series so knew I couldn't get the same, but started looking at the 3 series instead..
Test drove a 320d, performance didn't seem that great but the salesman said that was due to how refined it is, its pulling away quick but so comfortable you don't really notice it - he said if i want some raw pulling power try the 330d. Tried the 330d and wow, put a smile on my face!
Worked out all the figures to see how much more expensive a 330d would be vs a GTD and surprised to see that with 20% discount and better finance APR its actually very comparable. So its now a case of making my mind up! Pestering all my friends for opinions but they keep saying I'm not comparing like for like cars. Yes its a 2l vs 3l, saloon vs hatchback BUT I prefer a GTD to a CC, and the 3 series over the 1 series..combine this with the great discount on 330d - I think it is comparable!
Whats swaying it for me (and need your help on this) is the iDrive system, which I got surprisingly attached to on my 1 hour test drive. I even called BMW assist and asked for directions to a pub.. I think thats a great feature - I visit a lot of companies so to be able to ask my own personal assisted to send the directions would be great .. but my question is - do you guys use it at all? And do you rate the iDrive system itself? Downsides on the bmw is I guess it doesn't look as fresh on the outside, felt a much bigger beast coming from a smaller car, and 2015 facelift approaching?
What makes me prefer the golf is its less flashy (am only early 20's so feel people will be a bit funny with me driving a big car, and my sister says people on the road aren't as nice to her now she's in a BMW from a Peugeot!), and I'd be able to get all the toys.. and especially love the Keyless entry. Whereas with the 330 I'd be going with, Msport+, vis pack, adaptive cruise control, & reversing camera. (Would love the HUD, elec seats, folding mirrors etc but can't justify them).
If anyone has any similar experiences, in their comparisons, in using BMW assist, getting to used to the size of a 3 series after coming from a hatchback, I'd be really grateful.
Thanks a million
