Doing some initial research about my suspension upgrade, thinking about switching to a set of coilovers for next season. The car is a DD (w/ crappy midwestern streets), but plan on doing auto-x on a monthly basis and 2-3 track days each year. Do note that I don't really drive the car that much (I walk/bike to work), max. 8k miles a year really, with the car only at 35k after 5.5 year of ownership.
I put in the BMW Performance spring/shock combo earlier this year, which a big step up over the stock ZSP and good learner setup for someone like me, who is pretty new to HP driving. But always wanted the freedom of adjustability like the Ohlins on my beemer (brining the compression 2-3 clicks down gives you a perfect sport tourer while 2-3 clicks firmer and 10-20mm higher in the rear gives you a pretty good track weapon). The current BMW performance setup feels pretty good for street, but the car still rolls a bit more than I like and springs/damping is a little soft from the last two auto-x I did
Okey, for the coilover, I am pretty much set on TC Kline for its bang per buck. Leaning toward the single adjustable kit for the ease of use, but difference in price between the single and double adjustable is not that huge. Are the double adjustable shocks mostly the same as the single adjustable one, but with one extra knob and adjustable valve? Do they perform the same when their setup correctly for the same road condition.
Also, what spring rates would you all suggest. TC Kline suggest 400F and 600R for street cars, but I think I can do 500F and 650R, considering that I uses sticky extreme summer tires (Hankook RS3) and have a relatively high tolerance for firm rides. However, I do mind noises a lot, so I plan on keeping the fixed Dinan camber plates instead of opting for relatively noisy adjustable ones (btw, I can dial in almost -3 degree of camber w/ Dinan plates and M3 front arms, which should do the job for me). I will be installing a M3 e92 front sway this week FYI, to try it out with my current setup.
Other than that, I also plan on upgrading the adjustable rear toe arms that Harold sells @ HPA. But the big question is that how big of performance benefit will I gain by changing the rear camber arms also. It is a bit of pain in the to change that since I will have to source a M3 style rear shocks through HPA or TC Kline. But the fact that it replaces the rear rubber lower shock mount to a solid bearing type has piqued my interest. The only problem is that they are more than $500 these days, thanks to BMW jacking up the prices on these in the recent years... I also heard there is a higher chance of failure to stock non-M shock mount after you put on coilovers that are much firmer than stock.
Anyway, hope you guys with experience on these suspensions setups would chip in. Harold, if you can offer some of your opinion on this, it would be much much appreciated too.
