I've seen a whole lot of back and forth as to how long it takes the car to go to sleep. I finally decided to measure it.
It's easy to do with my car, as the dashcams come on when the car wakes up and continue running as long as the power is on to the lighter fuse in the trunk. I pulled the rear camera footage from my commute of last Friday night and looked at the timestamp on the video when different events occurred.
Car into park: 19:32:30 (approximated as 1 second after motion stops)
Engine shutdown (approximated from lights being turned off): 19:32:42
Door close: 19:33:01 (from the 'thump' of the door)
Door lock: 19:33:04 (from the flash of the taillights)
Power down: 19:36:04 (from the time the camera turns off)
Exactly 3 minutes after the door was locked, the accessory power turned off. I'm sure the time would be different if I didn't lock the car on exit. If I get ambitious, I'll look at that over the holiday weekend.
FWIW,
George
