Focus RS or 235?

Be great to have a "vs" thread.

Anyway, anyone interested in the upcoming release of the RS? I presume Ford will ensure it meets or exceeds the Golf R spec's (I'm not debating looks).

The Fiesta ST sounds interesting, but way too small and I just don't appreciate the looks of the vehicle (see above). The RS appears better proportioned assuming it's not too boy-racer.

IDK: American muscle, AWD, 350hp, seats 5 + dog. Could be a compelling package?

Pay off car before trade or use cash for down payment?

Not a good numbers guy with all things to consider here.

Payoff for 135 is 10k or I could apply that towards new car. What is better? Does it matter? Thinking an M2 if I like what I see when it drops.

Steering issue?

I am having a steering issue with my 2015 228i xdrive. It seems to have no center straight ahead direction but wanders off to the left or the right if I don’t make constant small adjustments to make it track straight. The dealer did an alignment which did not help. The head mechanics noticed the issue and said they would contact BMW. Now they are telling me that this is a characteristic of 2 series steering because they noticed it on another 228i. Has anyone else noticed this “characteristic” in their car?

Connected Drive Hack

An article from PC World about a vulnerability allowing a hack via Connected Drive: http://ift.tt/1KhblzZ

Quote:

BMW cars found vulnerable in Connected Drive hack

A security vulnerability in BMW’s Connected Drive system allowed researchers to imitate BMW servers and send remote unlocking instructions to vehicles. The problem was discovered by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), a German motoring association, and was verified on several models of BMW cars. The attack took advantage of a feature that allows drivers who have been locked out of their vehicles to request remote unlocking of their car from a BMW assistance line. “They were able to reverse engineer some of the software that we use for our telematics,” said Dave Buchko , a BMW spokesman. “With that they were able to mimic the BMW server.”

The auto maker has already started sending out software patches to the 2.2 million cars equipped with Connected Drive and said it hadn’t come across any cases in which the vulnerability had been used to unlock or attempt to unlock its cars. Vehicles in the U.S. will get it beginning from next week, said Buchko. The fix adds HTTPS encryption to the connection from BMW to the car, which runs over the public cellular network. The added encryption will not only safeguard the content of the messages but also ensures that the car only accepts connections from a server with the correct security certificate.

The incident highlights what is likely to be a big issue for auto makers in the coming years: identifying and patching software vulnerabilities and securing the technology going into modern cars. Today’s cars have millions of lines of computer software and are increasingly connected. Many cars offer Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular connections, can be linked with smartphones and other devices and even accept third-party apps. All provide potential attack points for hackers. “If all it does is open the locks, it’s concerning, but if that vulnerability could have also sent messages to shut off the brakes, it would have been catastrophic,” said Joshua Corman of The Cavalry, a non-profit that works with auto makers on cyber-security issues.

The organization, which launched in 2013 from the Defcon and BSides security conferences, recently published a framework with recommendations for auto-makers from the computer security industry about how to detect issues, contain and isolate them and respond to them. In part, it calls on car makers to publish policies that welcome interaction with the computer security industry. Because of laws like the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Computer, Fraud and Abuse Act, some researchers are hesitant to come forward with vulnerabilities lest they be accused of hacking and prosecuted, said Corman. In that case, a potentially serious security problem could go unpatched for years. “Our general intent is that the car industry are masters of their domain, we are the masters of ours and the safety outcome will be better if we work together,” he said.

Anniversary gift for my nurse wife...

So my wife is a nurse looking for a water resistant watch that she can wear while working (lots of hand washing, sanitizer, etc). I want her to have something nice and good quality that will last. Have gone through a few cheap ones with no luck. Anyone have any suggestions? Not looking to spend thousands of dollars but a few hundred isn't out of the question. I am willing to explore options so recommend away!

So what do people use this "storage" bin for?

I am genuinely curious what use, if any, people find for the tiny hinged-top storage bin in the 2-Series console.

I guess it could hold a pen, but the ensuing rattle would drive me bonkers. Loose change would make the same noise. Maybe a parking pass? I really would have preferred an open bin to this shallow covered space. But maybe I just haven't figured it out yet. So what do you guys and gals use this for?

Wheels and caliper painting

I know this has been talked about before but I wanted to get some ideas or opinions on what I'm thinking about. I love the M sport wheels that came with my 228i M sport and do not want to change. I also like the blue break calipers the M breaks provide. I do not need the breaks but thought painting them to match my Estoal blue 228i as well as painting or powder coating the wheels gloss black might look cool. Thoughts?

Reputation points system broken?

The Reputation points won't accumulate (well it did before but somehow it stopped for my account)... Anyone else having the same problem?

anyone have any experience with the W204 C-class?

was thinking about possibly trading my E90 for one. I drove a C300 4-matic at work and was really impressed with the 7-speed automatic. the inteiror wasnt as good as the E90 but I think it drove better. Ive had the e90 for almost a year now and was thinking about trying something else. the e90 has been good, the only real repair has been a washer fluid pump. Im just worried about the relaibility of the benz vs the bmw. my uncle had a few benzes back in the late 90s early 2000s and they were all pieces of shit.

Buy the M235i or wait for the M2?

Hey guys,

My dealership is giving an amazing deal on a fully loaded m235i for 550+tax on a 48 month lease. Should I take the deal or wait for the M2?

avarus or enkei

I was debating on either avarus or enkei wheels. Which is better?

M2 Flagship Car?

I don't know why, but I have this deep hope that this M2 becomes the new "Flagship" sports car! I know BMW is going to try and keep it off the heels of the M3/M4 with them being the traditional "flagship sports car, but does anyone else think that this new M2 could really be the new big thing with the roots of the M3? I cant be the only one!!!

If I could order my 2 series in any color it would be:

For me? Tanzanite Blue

I will stop poo-pooing Glacier Silver

I'm getting close to a 2 series order. My present car is a 2002 530i MT, SP in the all too common titanium silver, but I really like titanium silver. When glacier silver came out, I was disappointed. It looked like a light gray. However, when I was at the dealership last evening at dusk, the glacier silver acquires a blue color just like a glacier. It was beautiful and aptly named. BMW has some very interesting paint colors.

Square track guinea pig.

So, I'm going to be the square setup track guinea pig here.

I'm ordering Apex ARC-8s in 18x8.5 ET 38 with 255/35 Dunlop Direzza IIs. I have camber plates in the front (or at least will have them installed on Monday) and am going to run maybe 2ish degrees on the street and adjust it up on the track. I already have the rear at 1.65 degrees, but I might pump it up a bit to 1.8. I'll see what the alignment specialist says.

I've ran a bunch of calculations and compared others on this forum and this "should" work with minimal poke. From what I can tell, you need to run at least ET 40 on the front to get an 8.5 to clear the strut anyway, so 38 can't hurt. I know an accepted setup is ET 35 on the front, but I'd rather minimize the poke. I'll grab a 3mm spacer if need be.

On the rear, I know ET 38 is very aggressive. But I want a square setup, so we will see how it fits. I think the negative camber should help a bit. Also, I'm not dropping the car and don't have any plans to.

I'll let everyone know how it goes and post pictures. You know, for science. Hopefully I don't get lost along the way and end up in Stancenation.

Any questions or comments, leave them here.

Any Pure Turbo N55 Stage 1 DIY's out there?

Like the title reads. I noticed on Pure's website for the N55 stage 1 it states that it is an easy install since they have a CHRA+Comp housing option available:

-100% stock appearance (undetectable by the dealership)

-Stock-like fast spool

-Easy to install (we have a chra+comp housing option which does not require turbofold removal)

-CNC Machined Compressor Housing

-VSR Balanced to over 115,000 RPM

-Larger Billet Compressor Wheel

-Modified Turbine Wheel

Would I be wrong in assuming that all that would be involved in installing this CHRA+Comp housing option would be to:

- Remove DP

- Remove all coolant/oil lines from stock CHRA cartridge

- Loosen, separate and slide out the stock CHRA+comp housing from stock turbo exhaust housing

- Install Pure CHRA+Comp housing back in to the stock turbo exhaust housing and clock comp housing to the previous stock configuration

- Re-install DP

- Flush coolant

Is this most of what would need to be performed to install the stage 1 on a N55 EWG or am I missing anything major? Does the subframe need to be dropped our can everything be accessed without dropping it? Thanks in advance!!

Trading iPhone 6 for iPhone 5s. As simple as swapping sim cards?

I have an AT&T-locked iPhone 6 that I will be trading with a neighbor who has an AT&T-locked iPhone 5s.

Not sure we can do this by ourselves, or if we need to go into an AT&T retail store to have done. Anyone know?

I'm wondering if it's as simple as backing up our phones, swapping sim cards, restoring our phones from the backup, turn on and use.

Or

If we then need to go to an AT&T store and active the sim card to the new phone?

M235i x-Drive Ordered!

Well, today was the day. After nearly two years of research, looking at every picture, and watching every youtube video, the trigger was pulled. Let's cut to the chase:

2015 BMW M235i x-Drive

Mineral Grey Metallic

Terra Dakota

Cold Weather Package

Premium Package

Technology Package

"Mixed Summer Tires" (Hoping they're PSS's!!)

I chose to go the adventurous route and take the quick trip to the Performance Center in South Carolina for delivery and couldn't be more stoked! I've done the Ultimate Driving Experience in the past and had a blast driving the 228i's so I can't wait to see what it's like in the M235. I'll have a production number next week and will update as the car is made. As the disposable funds roll in, my long mod list will hopefully become shorter and shorter, but for starters, the iND reflector deletes will have to do. I'd love to hear the communities thoughts and look forward to getting my baby home!

My interpretation of the newest mule pics

My girlfriend is adept with photoshop so I took this opportunity to have her teach me some of her skills (she did most of the work hah). Basing this off the newest mule shots and altering the previous rendering. I think this is more realistic in comparison to the previous iteration. Only the front/ bumper were altered. Let me know what you guys think.

Your F22 dealership experience ?

Mine wasn't the best, so, I was curious about you guys' experiences with dealers for your F22 purchase. Because I want to be fair to my dealer and I don't want to bash my dealer publicly, I will not name the dealer.

Initial experience when test driving the car was ok ... they didn't like me driving their only M235i present on the lot, stating that it has ~100 miles, making it hard to sell as "New". I understood, but I had to convince them that I'm a serious buyer and really need to test the car out - handling, steering, power, braking, comfort, tech, etc. They finally gave in and let me drive a decent amount. SA was friendly and professional.

After signing the deposit to order the car, my experience has been so-so. The CA is very friendly and helpful when I can get a hold of him ! But, a few times, emails and calls have been met with no response.

Since this is my first BMW purchase, and I'm totally new to the whole ordering process, Deutschland, production, trans-Atlantic shipping, etc, I really wanted them to take the initiative to keep me informed about the status, but have not received any updates (proactively, without me contacting them) after the prod # was assigned.

Overall, I like my CA a lot ... he's a cool guy and helpful, but just would have liked them to be more proactive with sharing updates.

I want to build a good relationship with them, so I'm not going to criticize them on the satisfaction survey from BMW NA, but ...

Your experience ?

The Democratic Presidential Candidate Debates May Well Be an Interview

Hillary Clinton has yet to announce that she will run for President. I don't see why she should or would so long as other Democrats, Dems who practically speaking have sufficient national recognition to challenge Ms. Clinton, don't announce.

And that's the ting. At the moment, it really doesn't matter what other Dem announces; none of them right now have a snowball's chance in hell of defeating her for the nomination.

So, if Ms. Clinton does finally announce she's running for the job, what will the Democratic debates be like?

All the best.

What did you forget today?

My age-addled brain is having a harder and harder time keeping up. We headed out to Chicago today for a conference for Wifey. And hour into the trip I realized I forgot my tripod. I had planned on some architectural shots with my tilt shift and some long exposure shots with my Lee filter. No such luck now. Then I went to take my BP meds tonight and realized I forgot to bring them. Now I'm going to feel like crap for four days. I even forgot to bring the mouse for my laptop, so now I'm stuck using this pathetic trackpad.:sigh:

Arrrrgh.:mad0260:

On top of that Chicago is going to get slammed with a nasty storm on Sunday. Guess I'll be inside all day watching pre-Super Bowl crap and then the big game. Hope it's all cleared out by the time we head home on Monday.

Gawd, I hate getting old. Although it does beat the alternative.

For you tall people, new pics from the launch video of the convertible.

Hello All,

At 6'5", the main reason I traded my '09 911S cabrio in for the new 2 series convertible was comfort. My wife and I like to use the wind blocker and in the Porsche it prevented me from reclining my seat back to a more comfortable position. I was pretty upright. The legroom was marginal in the 911 as well.

I have way more legroom in the new 2 coupe but I am most comfortable with the seat back reclined a bit. I was hoping that the wind blocker in the new 2 convertible would allow me to do so. It appears from this picture that this new 2 might be PERFECT for me. The wait is killing me. (EPA release 3/13/15)

With the wind blocker....

The new 2, it looks like I will have some room to recline a bit, :happyanim:

Delivery Time

Hello Guys:

I placed an order for an M235 about 3 weeks ago.

Estoril Blue, Coral Red

Premium Package

Tech Package

Manual Transmission

LSD

Black grilles

I'm hoping to add the M Performance interior trim parts by the summer.

Was able to get an allocation immediately. Car went into production the 28th and is scheduled to finish the 4th! How long does delivery usually take to the dealership after production finishes? I'm assuming it is a long process but just wanted to get a timeline. Anyone have an idea?

Super excited for the car to come in!

Thanks guys.

BMW Admits Demand for BMW M7, Still Denies Working on It

Quote:

In a recent interview with Autoblog, Carsten Pries, the BMW M Product Chief admitted that he received e-mails from customers with the rendering of the future BMW 7 Series with four tailpipes at the back, pointing to an M version, the M7 to be more precise.

The M division would also love to get a chance at challenging the aforementioned super-fast limousines and show them how it’s done but the truth of the matter is, resources are limited.

“We always have more ideas than resources,” said Pries adding that the brand needs to, “stay focused and prioritize.”

Another issue is that even though e-mail have been sent and received, consequently taken into consideration, the demand has to be big enough to justify a possible investment into a proper M car.

Otherwise, the company could be building a car that would eventually flop when it goes into production and that’s a chance BMW isn’t willing to take at the moment.

It’s rather interesting too since they did appreciate that cars like the 2 Series Active Tourer or the 3 Series GT are worth the investment. And the sales numbers seem to agree, the 2er reaching more households worldwide than previously anticipated.

How would an M7 look like?

If BMW would release the M7 this time around, it would use the G10/G11 chassis with some improvements and the updated S63 engine in the X5 and X6 M models.

That means it would weigh around 1,700-1,800 kg (3,747 lbs to 3,968 lbs) thanks to extensive CFRP, aluminum and magnesium usage and would have 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal.

It would probably also be hooked up to the 8-speed ZF gearbox on the SUVs since the 7-speed DCT made by Getrag used in the M5/M6 and M3/M4 models is limited to 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque.

An M Performance car would also do the trick, like the rumored M770i model that has been going around for quite some time. However, in this case, it’s hard to imagine what engine could be used to kick things off. Most likely, it could be an improved version of the 4.4-liter V8 on the 750i models we have today.

That would make such a car close to what Alpina is offering in the shape of the B7 Biturbo that has 540 HP and 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque.

Need M3 replacement advice

And no, it won't be an M4. I figure this forum will have the best group of people with experience in other high performance cars.

Short version: I went truck shopping in December and bought a Raptor. My M3 warranty was close to expiring and I was dealing with body shop issues that were taking up too much time. BMW made me a ridiculous low ball offer for the trade in. Ford offered me a reasonable value so I traded it. Now it's been a month. I need another fast car. Keeping the truck, I need that too.

It will be a DD in Nashville pothole city driving with occasional highway trips and the very occasional track (Bowling Green) or mountain road event. The M4 would be the most ideal car but I am taking a BMW vacation. I also prefer to buy a car 1-2 years old. So it has to be something I can get a good deal on. In 2 years, whatever I buy will be gone in favor of the NSX.

Budget: $50-90k. Preferably 4 seats so my boy can tag along.

Contenders:

1. Maserati GT MC. Pro: Beautiful car. Powerful. Wow factor. I can get a good deal on one I'm sure. Con: they are heavy and not really designed to keep up with the M3. Another Pro: Italian sound.

2. Jaguar (XKR?). I don't know much about Jags. I'd want the race version I guess. Not too many close by I can look at. I suspect, like the Maserati, they are not that great for flinging around a road course. But, I'm sure I can get a great deal on one.

3. Porsche. Pro: there are tons of them around. Con: there are tons of them around. And, truthfully, I've never pictured myself in one. Too many 65 year old ladies drive them around here. And I don't think the GT3 is in my budget.

4. Lexus RC-F. Pro: it's Lexus luxury and supposedly as good as the M3. Con: Not much exterior wow factor and I can't get a used one so big financial hit.

5. Nissan GT-R. Pro: fast. Con: I have yet to meet someone who would recommend it as a DD on city streets.

Can anyone suggest cars that I haven't considered? Corvette is out -- wife hates them and it's only 2 seats. Viper is out for the same reason.

I really want the Maserati so I can have the experience of owning one. Perhaps I should have titled this: Are Maseratis any good on the track?

Thanks guys

19" Style 405 wheels upgrade, should I go with Eibach or Vogtland?

Hello fellow M235i owners, next week I'm upgrading my wheels/tires to 19" Style 405 with 235/35 fronts and 255/30 rears.

I'm considering giving a smooth lower look to my car after this change, by that I mean not an aggressive lower look that will make the car bumpy/stiff/uncomfortable. My country does not have the best roads, I have bumps, holes, uneven streets and in addition, my house entrance has a ramp, so definitely I cannot go to low (check the enclosed video).

I'm just looking to not have a big gap between the tires and the fenders, using my current OEM shock absorbers and I absolutely don't want to kill the car's comfort.

So, H&R springs are off, 25mm es way to much for the explained reasons. I have Eibach's and Vogtland's on the menu:

- Eibach will drop 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear.

- Vogtland will drop 15mm both front and rear.

Thoughts and suggestions? Many thanks!!! :D

Dumb questions on play button / automatic playback / iPhone

Dumb question #1:

I may be missing it in the manual or in online searches, but where is the simple play button in the car controls? Right now I have to take out my phone, open the music app on my iPhone and press play. I'd like a button on the dash but can't find a corresponding commanding in the car system to map to one of the shortcut buttons.

Dumb question #2

Can't seem to figure out why sometimes music playback resumes automatically when starting my car (w/ HK Premium). Seems to work after sync'ing the phone and reconnecting, then somewhere thereafter stops working consistently. Has anyone figured out the trick or setting here? Do not see it on the Phone or car Media settings.

By Vivian Ho Updated 5:44 pm, Wednesday, January 28, 2015

A San Francisco deputy public defender was handcuffed and arrested at the Hall of Justice after she objected to city police officers questioning her client outside a courtroom, an incident that her office called outrageous and police officials defended as appropriate.

The Tuesday afternoon arrest of attorney Jami Tillotson as she denied police officers’ attempts to take photos of her client without explanation raised questions about police intimidation and harassment, Public Defender Jeff Adachi said at a Wednesday news conference................

Poll: What kind of driver are you ?

Just curious and bored waiting for my new M235i.

What kind of driver are you ?

1 - Track regularly

2 - Track once in a while

3 - No track, daily driver with a lead foot and who enjoys good performance and likes to race off of red lights

4 - Daily driver who enjoys a balance of comfort + luxury + performance and doesn't give a shit about racing

5 - Daily driver who's just proud of the BMW badge and doesn't care about performance

Surely, there is some overlap among the different types. So choose more than one if necessary :D

Thanks !

Plastic Trim Removal

Has anyone ever removed the narrow trim piece that surrounds your traction control and the sport/eco pro buttons? It seems that it should just snap out like the trapezoid shaped piece does that surrounds your auto shifter just to the right of it. I don't want to break it by prying too hard. Is there some trick?

I really can't wait to see how the M2 turns out

Road and Track: First Drive: 2017 Jaguar XE

Quote:

'The 3 Series we've missed is back, but it has a British accent and a supercharged six.'

Most groups of vehicles are lucky enough to contain one car that's so far ahead of every other that it defines the class. The Germans are perhaps better than we are at calling out the obvious—what we call "small hatchbacks," they more simply call the Golfklasse, or "Golf Class," named after the Volkswagen Golf.

We don't have a name for the class of cars that the BMW 3-Series invented. "Compact, premium, predominantly rear-drive sedans with luxurious appointments and sporting pretense" doesn't exactly flow off the tongue. But we know this group of cars well. It contains the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q60, Lexus IS, and Mercedes C-Class.

And now, the Jaguar XE. It'll be about a year before this sedan makes its way onto our roads, which is convenient. It gives you plenty of time to finish out the lease on your current car and start saving money for a down payment on an XE.

It's been a long time since a car so unceremoniously tromped the competition in driving dynamics the way the 3 Series used to do, but the Jaguar XE does just that. The reigning driver's-car champs—Cadillac ATS and Lexus IS 350 F Sport—are in big trouble when the Jaguar arrives.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves.

The Jaguar XE is an all-new, aluminum-chassis sedan. The 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine, the only one available at launch, carries over from the brand's other cars, but the rest of the five-seater is new. It is, in every external measure, within two inches of the current 3 Series. Importantly, it's 1.5 inches wider and 0.6 inch lower, and as a result, it looks far more sporting on the road.

The aluminum construction doesn't seem to actually save any weight. Jaguar claims a base curb weight of 3671 pounds in Euro trim, which means we can likely expect the rear-drive sedan to weigh 3750 pounds by the time it arrives here. That's a good 150 pounds more than the steel 3 Series. Though the XE is dimensionally similar outside, it feels a half-size smaller inside, especially in the back seat.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since the 3 Series has gotten rather large. The XE's front seats are wonderfully comfortable; the rears are somewhat narrow, thanks to substantial bolstering that pushes you toward the center. Legroom is at a slight premium back there, and there's enough headroom only for about a six-footer. The trunk is slightly smaller than a 3 Series's, but to complain about any of these things is to forget that this is the compact luxury class. The Jag is the right size, inside and out.

The rear-drive XE will go on sale in the spring of 2016 with that supercharged 340-hp V6 mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Shortly thereafter, a diesel option will be added—a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 180 hp. By the end of the year, we should also see a 2.0-liter turbo gas four based on the same new "Ingenium" design as the diesel. All engines will be available with all-wheel drive as an option—and Jaguar promises that a manual transmission will be available on the 2.0-liter gas rear-drive model. More on that later.

We drove a prototype XE with both the diesel and the V6. And while this new, in-house diesel is very good, we'll concentrate on the model with six spark plugs. Our test car was fitted with adaptive dampers and 19-inch wheels wearing Dunlop Sport Maxx RT tires developed specially for the XE.

The XE uses double-wishbone front suspension and JLR's "Integral Link" rear suspension, which is essentially a multilink setup that decouples vertical and longitudinal forces. According to Jaguar, this allows the use of softer bushings for the vertical plane (for a smoother ride) and harder bushings elsewhere for better wheel control—and therefore, handling.

Whatever Jaguar's done, it works like a charm. The XE continues Jaguar's tradition of impeccable ride quality combined with excellent body control in corners. The XE bombs down lumpy, twisty back roads at felony speeds without ever losing its composure or molesting its bump stops.

Here's the best part: It's not just capable, it's interactive and fun, too. Jaguar's first use of electric power-steering assist (EPAS) is a slam-dunk. The company claims that it remained with hydraulic steering until it decided that EPAS technology, which it's been working on since 2008, actually provides "better on-center feel and linearity" than hydraulic steering.

Bullshit.

Not compared with Jaguar's own hydraulic steering, perhaps, but that was an outlier. Compared with most every other EPAS setup on the road, the XE's steering is natural and talkative and, therefore, a huge relief. It might not be quite as good as the old hydro setup, but I'll say one thing: If electric power steering had started out this good, you wouldn't have heard us complain about it, ad nauseam, for the past few years. Kudos to Jag for not implementing EPAS until it was good enough.

And bravo to the engineers for making a modern car that's so enjoyable to drive. The ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is, as always, absolutely transparent in its operation, giving you exactly the gear you want, when you want it, without you ever feeling a shift. The supercharged six is far more refined in this application than elsewhere, and its immediate power delivery is a welcome reminder of how laggy most turbo engines are.

Is the XE perfect? Of course not—there is no such thing. First, there's the caveat of Jaguar's legendary reliability history. We experienced no problems with the XE, and the build quality of our preproduction prototype test cars was excellent, though both cars had rattles coming from their driver's-side door seal and a whistle from air passing over the passenger mirror. These are minor issues—the fit and finish was flawless; let's hope this remains true of the production cars.

Second, JLR's new touchscreen navigation and infotainment system is far more colorful and somewhat quicker than the outgoing disaster, but it's still difficult to use and painfully slow. It lacks radio presets, requires far too many cumbersome presses to do simple tasks, and the navigation-map zoom is awfully slow.

And third: Jaguar USA's product planners need to shift gears, quickly, before our car goes into production. At the moment, the manual transmission is scheduled to appear only on base (rear-drive, four-cylinder) models. It appears JLR still thinks it's 1992, where college professors buy their Toyota Tercels with manuals to save a couple bucks on purchase and fuel.

If any models should carry a stick, it's the supercharged V6 and the turbodiesel. Manuals are bought only by enthusiasts these days—not collegiate cheapos. Furthermore, the V6 manual powertrain has already been federalized (it's in the 2016 F-type, which we drove but can't tell you about yet), and it is the proper halo car to suck enthusiasts into Jaguar showrooms.

For what purpose, that halo? Whether they buy a manual or sell their soul and grab an automatic, once they drive an XE, it's game over for anything else in the class. You've been warned—start saving now.

14' Cayman S vs M235i

I've got a 2014 M235i with a few modifications to say the least but... I really want to drive a true sports car. I feel the M235I is a little to conventional and doesn't have that "sports car" look.. I can purchase a Cayman S with a manual transmission and all essential track options such a Porsche Torque Vectoring, PASM and of coarse a fire extinguisher (3 seconds faster around the track!).

Now, the car has no navigation or back up camera (which I never use). I do not have kids and the payment is about $200 a month higher.

I've been driving BMW since I started driving in 06'. However, I have been managing a Porsche dealer for the last three years and my boss is still trying to convince me to get into a Cayman S.

Any previous Cayman owners?

Oooh, Bimmerpost iphone app updated Jan 28, 2015!

Hmmm I see that the iphone app is updated as I had to re-log in and also everything under "My Forums" is gone. So the new updates I see are:

-can "appreciate" posts in the app now

-mentioning users with "@" should work again

-there is a draft bin now for when our posts don't go through! Yay!

-we can see reputation points right next to the usernames in posts now

Anything else new?

Can this be turned off in I drive or does it have to be coded like the older models?

Annual Junior Achievement Fund Raising

Hello fellow M3 owners,

I know I don't post on here much. Here is the link to my m3forum.net posting. http://ift.tt/1ybgnbq. I'm more reputable in that forum. If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me.

It's that time of the year again. I'm raising money for Junior Achievement again this year. Your contributions helps over 125,000 local students. Below are two short video on one of the Junior Achievement programs and what Junior Achievement provides to our next generation.

Make a difference by helping the next generation of our country to envision bigger and better things. Open up their minds to the possibilities and opportunities that are available for them in the real world. This inspires our kids to accomplish their goals and they will pass this knowledge onto their peers. When our kids let their own light shine, they unconsciously give their peers permission to do the same.

My goal this year is to raise at least $150.00 this year for this event not including my contribution. Any amount will help. If you'd like to know more about what Junior Achievement is all about. Here is a brief background information:

Junior Achievement (JA) provides in-school and after-school programs for K-12 students which focus on entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness. JA programs are implemented by volutneers and teach concepts through experiential learning. For example, students in an elementary school might learn about unit versus assembly line production by producing donuts. Or, high school students might participate in our popular JA Stock Market Challenge, a stock market simulation game in which teams compete to build their stock portfolios.

You can also find out more information regarding this event in the three links below:

Laser Lights versus LEDs

BMW recently exhibited their laser light technology at the CES in Las Vegas.

I have 4 questions:

1. Does anyone know if laser lights will be an option for cars in the US?

2. If the delay in having laser lights as an option in the US is regulatory, when will the laws be reviewed?

3. If the laws are revised to allow laser lights, how long will it take for BMW to bring the lights to the US?

4. What are the benefits of laser lights over LED's?

Thanks.
