Tips for Minor Modifications

Hi everyone - this is a great forum here with lots of good information. I have a 2011 335d that just surpassed the three year time line. Just under 50K miles. I drive the car regularly and about every two weeks, I drive from Tucson to Scottsdale. Thus far it's been a fantastic car.

A couple of quick questions on some potential modifications: A) When it comes to installing a "chip" for the engine, is it recommended or not? If it is recommended, what chip has provided the most reliable performance? B) The cornering of the 335d is a little mushy to my liking and if I'm in a curve while hitting a bump, the front seems to sway - so I'd like to stiffen the suspension up. Any recommendations on strut or shock enhancements would be appreciated. Not that I'll be putting the car on the track, just want it tighter.

Thanks,

FS VRSF 3" Downpipes N54

Bought these from a fellow member on here who had them on his e92. I installed them on my e90 and fitment is tight, with a slight rub against the heatshield. Previous owner (mechanic) said he had zero fitment issues on his e92... So I'm not sure if there might be a small difference in undercarriage layouts between the e90 and e92.

That said, these pipes are amazing. They do everything the claims say they do. Unicorns come out from the tail pipes at WOT, the engine becomes MUCH more responsive and the turbos spool much quicker. These DP's + 35% ethanol on JB4 map 5 put bus lengths between me and two e39 m5's today.

These are still on the car for the time being, but will be removing them in the next week (or as soon as I have a serious buyer if before then). Would consider trading for 7" VRSF Intercooler.

Jb4 code reading

hi guys

I have a jb4 g5 with my usb in the engine bay (apparently the mechanic couldn't feed through the glove box on my e93)

When I got a CEL light come on yesterday, I was wondering if I could pull over and then connect to my laptop with the car via the usb to read the code.

I know you can read it in the dash selecting 1-1 but the damn thing flicks by so quickly!

Funnily enough, I was still boosting up to 1-5 PSI (according to my fuel guage) and was holding that boost. I really hope it isn't either of the turbos failing :( CEL only came on randomly 3 times during a 400km drive.

F82 M3 More "Raw" Than E92 M3?

Now that there are a good number of F82 M3 owners, I was wondering if most people thought that the F82 M3 was more "raw" than the E92 M3? I'm asking this question because one big disappointment for me when the E92 came out was how much more refined it was vs the E46, which took away a LOT of the M characteristics that I loved about the E46 M3. This includes added weight, less steering feel, and a general sense of a car that was built to sell more units by offering a smoother ride that compromised the "raw" feel of the E46.

Many reviews of the F82 M3 hint that with the weight reduction and increased power the M division has taken the car back to being more "raw". I'm very curious to hear what current owners think who owned an E92 M3 and are now driving an F82 M3. I'm hoping that people do think that the car is closer to the raw experience of the E46 than the E92, as I definitely feel that is missing from the E9x series.

Thanks in-advance for everyone's opinions. I'm guessing this thread will be insightful with some possible disagreements that will probably be interesting to hear...

Over Mileage Question

Hey,

I am currently leasing a 2014 4 series. I would like some clarification of some rumors that I have been hearing around. I signed for 10,000 miles a year, which was a big mistake, and I know for a fact that I am going to go a few thousand over that by the time the lease is up. Now, I have been hearing that if you lease another car from BMW when your lease is over or do the pull ahead program, they will waive the extra mileage or they will discount it (aside from the .16 cents a mile). Is this possible? Has anybody ever experienced this?

Thanks.

What is this center console cubbyhole?

Getting to know my new (used) 2014 X1 xDrive35i M-Sport and discovered this cubbyhole inside the center console that I have no idea what it is for. I've attached a pic with as arrow pointing toward it. Any of the collective out there have an idea what it is for?

fuming.

Who ever it was who had written Lups on my car better always stay as a mystery to me. Never. Ever. Come near me. I will fucking bite your head off.

Lups.

where do you fill up?

Where do you usually get gas for your M?

I usually fill up 93 octane at Esso but have been told that their fuel is not good so now I'm trying Shell 91. So far so good but was just curious where everyone else usually fills up.

Will this setup rub? Any thoughts?

Does anyone know if this set up would rub?

Gtechniq Detail Under a Gazebo

the great british weather can be unreliable at the best of times,

and as i haven't got access to a garage big enough to work in properly.

the choice was either to rent a garage space (expensive) or buy a gazebo.

so i bought a 4.5m x 3m gazebo in white as it allows a decent amount of light to work in.

(i sold the idea of a gazebo to the missus with thoughts of summer garden parties ;))

it isn't too difficult to set up or break down as it weighs a fair bit...

50kgs including the sides!:confused0068:

i fixed it down to the guy rope points with screw in eyes in the house wall, and kerb, plus a couple of heavy containers of water strapped to the legs.

neighbours probably think i'm barking but i've got the other car to do and some some other work that under a canopy makes it much more civilised...

i'm really happy with the results, after touching up some stone chips and sanding back.

machine polishing i did 2 passes, one with megs 'ultimate compound', and then finished with liquid shine 'zero swirl'.

panel wiped down and then sealed my cars paintwork, door shuts, engine plastics and exterior plastic trim with C1.

and after leaving to cure for 12 hrs topped off with C2v3.

i cleaned the interior with W2, treated the leather with L1, C6 matt dash, G5 glass, and carpets with I1.

i've just got the alloys to do, take off, clean, and then coat with what's left of the C1 (C1,C4, and C5 are the same product).

Meistershaft stainless catback with resonated midpipe

i'm located in OC.

It's the entire catback with includes the resonated midpipes

http://ift.tt/1nhxi72

asking $1199 for the set. you can see that the catback alone is $1400.

axleback is perfect. midpipes have a lil scrapage but no dents on them.

it's a very nice sounding setup.

Will 313M alloys go on an F31?

Hi

My current alloys are 403M alloys which are a decent looking alloy but are a little "busy" for my tastes. I've always liked the 313M alloys I had on my old e90....forged, light weight and easy to clean.....will they go on an F31?

403M:-

19x8.0 ET36

19x8.5 ET47

313M:-

19x8 ET37

19x9 ET39

Hub diameters the same for both alloys...72.5mm

The lower offset on the slightly wider rear on the 313M should allow it to clear hopefully?

I don't fancy the BMW performance 20" rims, the 313's were the BMW performance choice for the e9x and probably give a better ride?

All of the above is google research so not necessarily 100% reliable.

bosch platinum iridium fusion #4503 spark plugs (8)

unused, installed on my ping pong table. 2x 4-packs. $40, toss me a few more for shipping plz.

Specs

STOCK NUMBER: 4503

PART NUMBER: FGR7DQI

Iridium Platinum, 14mm Thread Size, 19mm (3/4") Reach, 5/8" (16mm) Hex Size, Gasket Seat, Interference Suppression Resistor, Surface Air Gap Plug, 4 Ground Electrodes, Iridium-Platinum Fused Center Electrode, .040" (1.02mm) Gap, Heat Range 7

Bosch combines the best features of their +4 plug with the advantages of iridium. The Bosch PlatinumIR Fusion plug fuses iridium with platinum, combining the superior properties of both materials into a single fine wire center electrode. Additionally this plug uses surface air gap technology and 4 yttrium enhanced ground electrodes for both performance and extra long life. The fine wire iridium/platinum center electrode (which is heat fused into the extended ceramic insulator) reduces the voltage necessary to jump the gap as well as reduces quenching. The 4 ground electrode design not only provides multiple radial spark paths, but also the surface air gap design creates optimal exposure of the air/fuel mixture to the enhanced ignition spark. The combination of an iridium/platinum center electrode and the yttrium -enhancement of the ground electrodes even further extends plug life. This plug is designed to give exceptional performance, reach self cleaning temperature faster for quicker starts, smoother acceleration and increased fuel efficiency.

High Idle

My car was misfiring like crazy so I took it in to the dealership since I don't have a cable to read the codes. Dealership replaced all the spark plugs and one of the ignition coils and the problem with the car shaking like crazy and sounding like a motorbike has gone away.

However, my car now idles at 800rpm as opposed to 600. No matter how long I drive the thing with the air conditioning off, the engine always settles down to about 800rpm. I don't think its the gas (I am running Shell VPower from the same station that I always go to). I've got 53k miles on the clock.

Anybody know what could be the cause? I've read that it could be injectors, VANOS, etc. How do I know for sure? Reason I ask is because I dont want to waste my time going to the nearest dealer which is 40 miles away just for them to tell me that there are no codes/problems.

Thanks everyone.

Software update

My non tech package 228 is showing

MX-003.004.0031

TX-003.004-031

As current software version installed

BMW update states if I install versions will be

Mx-3.5.4

Tx-3.5.6

But the documentation show as a 2012 copyright. So, should I update ? Has anyone done this update ?

Clutch Replacement

Hey Guys,

It seems like my throw out bearing is shot. I have loud rattle on idle but when I push the clutch pedal down, it goes away. After some researching that's what I've concluded. :thumbdown

My clutch is perfect, no slipping but I might as well replace it. What parts should i change?

I would like to do a full refresh. Is changing the flywheel necessary? Should I go OEM for the clutch and flywheel or upgrade it?

I'm thinking clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, pilot bearing , shifter bushings , and short shifter since the transmission is out. Since doing the clutch is expensive and doesn't happen often, I want to start gathering parts, is there anything I missed?

I would like to do any related parts that has to do with the transmission out, I would to do it once properly and not cut corners. So if that means I should change the flywheel, I will.

Let me know what you guys recommend replacing and why.

Thank you :)

NEED HELP. yellow brake light and traction control off light

NEED HELP: just finished installing new lowering springs on my e90 and connected everything back (i think). turned on car and got a yellow brake light and a traction control off light.. ive never had these on before. brakes felt fucked up for a good minute and then felt back to normal. now my guess is the abs sensor wire and the brake pad wear sensor wire(that i disconnected to install springs) was not correctly connected. can anyone chime in?

BMW PE or HPF gen2

Title says it all. I am seeking opinions from the owners from either side or best all of someone who has owned both in their lifetimes. I currently have the BMW Pe with vrsf cless dP and it sounds great, it's loud in the high end when it needs to be. But I am looking for something more

Cracked Rim

I fill up my rear passenger side tire every day to 41psi (i thought thats a bit high but its what the door sticker says) and the next day it always down to 28 - 30psi. So i thought okay.. slow leak.. no problem, simple fix.

Turns out the rim was cracked by the previous owner and the weld to fix the original crack has some how split open again.

I think i read somewhere at some point that you cant fix an already once repaired rim when it comes to cracks. is this correct?

worse case scenario... how much does it cost to get a single oem 193m rim?

Janus-design

I ordered my Double-din kit from them 2 months ago, and finally last Monday I picked up my car completed with the Pioneer AVIC-8000NEX installed. Awesome unit!! The reason why I'm posting this thread is to warn consumers wanting to do a double-din install.

I received the first bezel with metal pieces on July 19th after sending payment on July 4th. The first one (bezel) I received was cracked with very little to no shipping foam or bubble wrap. I'm very understanding, especially coming from germany that it could've happened during transit. So, I sent Chris an email the day of me receiving the bezel and he didnt get back to me until 4 days later.

He sent me out another one but it didnt leave his store til July 31st. No sense of urgency at all!

I finally received my second bezel on August 19th, he refused to modfiy the shipping to get to my place quicker. On top of that, there were two missing divots on the second bezel. Luckily, the stereo shop was able to work around, but I hate to pay for it in extra labor. The engineering on this was a joke! The bottom 2 divots didn't stay in the rubber gramets supplied.

With having delayed replies to my emails and a majority of the times no emails in between this whole cluster fuck. I fought for 2 months and finally was able to get this done. Chris didn't give two shits at all, nor did he want to give me any dime back at all. To my fellow 1ers please stay away from this guy, he's bad business.

Doing ECU FLASH - Question

When performing the ECU flash, does one lose all the FDL coding settings etc that you did previously?

If so can one back those up and reapply (provided the ECU flash didn't remove or change some of those settings parameters).

so did anyone switch over to other oils and ran on the track ever since that whole oil notice? or should i just be sticking to 10w60.....i know some ppl have switched over to lighter oils but i never got a definitive answer on if ppl have changed to other weights AND have tracked excessively. anyone have any luck with other oils, with regular track days, and an analysis to back up the switch?

i'm due for an oil change this week before heading on to the track on the 12th.

Cooling Sytem Maintenance

So I just wanted to make a comment regarding the cooling system maintenance. If you read Mike Miller's old school maintenance and his thoughts about BMW cooling systems, you'll find he thinks any BMW past the E30 has lousy cooling system components subject to catastrophic failure and the cooling system should be rebuilt every 60,000 miles or so.

As I post for too much, my car now has 260,000 miles on it. Yesterday my wife and I used my car for our weekend errands, which we usually don't do. We went to the grocery store and then she wanted to stop by Lowe's to get some plants, and I needed a new line trimmer head. Well since we had cold groceries to try and keep cold we kept turns in the E90 with it idling and the AC on max cool (we decided that the plants would have cooked in the car if we went to Lowe's first). We took turns sitting with the E90 while at Lowe's so it probably was idling with the AC on for a good 40 minutes. With all this idling and max AC cooling on my 260K car, I was sure it would explode (or at least over heat); but it didn't! :happyanim: I was truly impressed. It was about 85 Deg. yesterday.

As far as maintenance of the cooling system this is it: (All DIY by the way)

- 1st coolant flush/refill at 76,000 miles

- New T-stat at 134,000 miles w/ new coolant

- New Water Pump at 149,500 miles w/ new coolant

- New OFH gasket at 161,500 miles w/ re-used coolant

- Complete cooling system hose replacement at 236,600 miles w/ new coolant. Including the heater hoses. Did not replace the radiator.

I know, "Col story Bro", but I just wanted to reassure my E90 Post Brethren, that this car we all love is pretty dammed robust.

Noise from rear wheel

Terrible grinding noise from rear passenger wheel I read somewhere in here a while back someone had the same problem. Any ideas?

OBD II question

Will every OBD II code result in the CEL light coming on, including the BMW specific codes?

Anyone have nightmares about their 1er?

Just woke up from the most infuriating nightmare about my 128i.

The dream started off with some friends over for a rager at my house and then vans full of strangers came over and started partying and dancing. Soon after that I went into the garage to find people dancing in the garage where my car used to be.

So of course I internally start freaking out but to my amazement there was a team of 7 police officers partying at my party. Three girls and three guys and one undercover girl. I approach one who wasnt partying and then i begin to open the gates of hell.

My car is gone and some ******* is taking MY CAR for a joyride! I shut down the party and become so infuriated that I say, "**** this, I am going to go get my car back."

At that point I woke up and went immediately to my garage to the 128i sleeping peacefully.

Anyone else have these types of nightmare?

Guy was cought doing 241km/t (150mph) in an i8

Yesterday, a guy borrowed his friends i8, and while he was doing 150mph, he passed a police motorcycle and got caught. He lost his driver license, and he probably won't get it back for at least 3 years. He will probably get some time in jail as well, and a big ass fine.

2014 BMW M235i M Performance Review by CarbonOctane.com

Hey guys, we got had the BMW M235i M Performance from Abu Dhabi Motors for the weekend to test out. Here's what we thought of it. Hope you will like our work.

Order Snafu

I placed an order, including a $1000 deposit, for a 2015 435i on July 22. On that date, my CA provided me with a VIR listing the production number. He advised me the car would probably arrive in October. I was thinking about its status a couple of days ago so I called BMW's 800 number and spoke to a representative, She informed me the car was ordered on July 10 and they had no additional information. It appears my CA moved my order to one they already had allotted to them. In any event, I sent an email to my CA yesterday and he responded my order was moved up then back. He subsequently copied me on an email he sent to his distribution manager inquiring why my September production sold is now showing a January (!?) build date. My CA indicated he will let me know what he learns from his manager. Does anyone have a guess as to what may be going on here? Are there constraints in place on 435's? I hope to educate myself about this situation before I hear back from my CA. By the way, I have purchased numerous BMW's from my CA and this is the first time I have had an issue.

Thanks in advance for you thoughts.

WTB: E90 Rear Bumper SGM Single Side Exhaust

I scraped a good bit of paint off of mine today and dinted it, so If anyone has one is good shape, let me know.

Open to sport, stock, anything. But, I only have the single side exhaust. LCI or pre-LCI doesn't matter. Color needs to be Sparkling Graphite.

Thanks!

E90 Ashtray iPhone5 Mount

Does anyone offer an E90 ashtray w/lighter mount for the iPhone5?

Oil quantity with oil cooler change??

So I am still working through my engine swap and have a question...

I know that we add 8.8L of oil with a fluid and filter change, but what would you add when you also swap out the cooler?

I don't want to over fill... but don't want to starve the motor either. If I only had a dipstick!:mad0260:

Anyone ever do this before? I thought about trying to fill up the cooler and lines and then add the 8.8L? Also wish I knew when (what temp) the oil cooler started to have oil fed through it.

Thanks!!!

JB + for sale

I'm going to save up and get a Cobb, so I'm looking to sell this JB+. I bought it off forum member here and after a 5 minute install, you get 50hp+ and quite a nice jump in power. I ran it for 10k miles or so before I uninstalled it for a dealer visit. I've had it sitting in my garage since until I decided I want to try Cobb.

I paid around $125 when I picked it up, so hoping to get most of that back.

Thanks.

128i Brakes on the Track

I was wondering with experiance tracking a 128i could chime in on their brake setup.

I recently did my first HPDE at Gingerman Raceway last weekend. I changed to Pagid S pads a few weeks ago in preparation and bled the brakes with super blue (I know they don't sell it anymore but I had an unopened can in my garage). The Pagid Ss are supposedly good for mild track use and seemed serious enough (all the pad material deposited during bed in was wiped off the rotors within a couple days of street driving).

This was first time driving on a track (I do have a few autocrosses and a car control clinic under my belt), and I was told that stock brakes would hold up fine as a novice. By the end of my first day I had pad fade (huge pedal effort gave little stopping power) and by the end of second day I had cooked the fluid and the pedal would suddenly drop an inch or two in a couple of the hard braking zones. I had a scary moment at the end of the back straight (105-110ish mph) where a 335i was taking off way too much speed but came off the brakes just in time!

post-track analysis showed that everything got very hot! The stick on wheel weights migrated and my parking brake began sticking a week later, even though I didn't use in on the track. I ate up 65-70% of the front pads and about 30-40% of the rears. The stock front rotors are in good shape, but the rears are scored pretty badly. I also noticed that the 128i has completely closed front wheel wells! No air directed at the brakes!

Despite the fact that the brakes faded, it was a blast! I need to figure out a better brake setup before I go back to the track. My instructor suggested that I move to a full race pad. I also think I will upgrade the fluid.

Any suggestions? I'm not running super grippy tires, just 225/45 17 PSS all around. I would love to go to a BBK except they're pricey and I want to continue running 17s. I don't want to throw away a bunch of money trying different pad and other components if I really need to run a bigger setup.

Thanks!

So I drove my old E90 again today after 2 months...

Yesterday I came back to visit my parents and sister in NJ from my place in MI. I recently moved on from my E90 328I to an F30 328I Xdrive Sport and wanted to take the opportunity to go out for a spirited run in my E90, which was given to my sister as a gift.

Just some quick notes about it: the steering is very heavy. Honestly, I think it is too heavy. The F30 on sport mode has the perfect balance between too light and too heavy steering like in the E90.

The I6 still feels noticeably smoother than my F30s motor. This is saying a lot considering my F30 has about 3000 miles and the E90 has nearly 88500 miles.

My F30 is far quicker than the E90, especially considering the 6-speed AT vs. 8-speed Sport AT, sport+, and the fact that my F30 is tuned and was recently dyno'd at about 235 WHP/250 or so FT-LBs on a mustang dyno.

The handling is perfect, still handles smooth and corners flat, even with stock shocks and tires. And of course the steering feel is there. The car is noticeably smaller inside than the F30 and the interior is old-school BMW. Still feels solid after 88.5K miles which I am not sure the F30 will, even though it has much more features, space, and a better decor.

Overall, I love my F30, but I also love this car. I am so happy I didn't get rid of it and I passed it on to a family member. It brings back good memories and it is still a fantastic car to drive.

It's heyday:

Does anyone think this forum is boring now?

Remember back the 2008ish 9ish era. The forum today sucks, each day I think to myself, this blows. Back in the day the threads they use to cook up in OT and even the car forum were hysterical…like literally falling out of your chair laughing, spitting, shatting your pants hysterical.

Fast forward today all you got are the same tired old members with the same tired dry humor,,like ahem, ahem. Oh that was mildly amusing.pffff

Lame…guess that what happens when all the funny members get banned.

Eibach Springs e90

I bought these off a forum member but never installed them. I'm concern I'll rub with my wider rims/tires if I go lower so I won't be installing these. I paid $150, so just looking to get most of what I paid.

Thanks.
