My wife has an X1 xDrive 28i. Between the weight of the thing, the terrible throttle lag, and raised suspension, it is not exactly "sporting". The engine is decent but I had thought there was no way I would want another BMW with the 28i setup. My mind has been changed.
I have an M235xi on order arriving first week in August. I'm a former M3 owner and want the 2 series with the best engine available. I used to think that was a no brainer for the 235 but today I took a 228i out for a solo road test and it is pure fantastic. Is it straight line as fast as the 235? No, but it isn't that far off and it feels incredibly light on its feet. The woes I have with that engine in the X1 do not translate into the 2er and depending on your price point and speed needs of the car, you can't go wrong with either 235 or 228.
The car I drove was at the BMW UDE outside of Seattle today and it was a Sport line 228i coupe with 8sp and Pilot Super Sports. I also drove a 328d, 428i, 335xi GT as well. The 2er was easily by leaps and bounds the best of those cars and is really quite a package for the price. As good as the 228 was, it made me even more excited for my upcoming 235.
