First things first, thankfully she is OK. She did not have much pain yesterday, but today she has been having some pretty bad lower back pain. We had a few pain killers from a dental surgery a while back which helped, but we plan on going to a doctor asap to make sure everything is OK. All you happily married guys will know how scared I was when she called, and I am just so thankful that she is ok, and also thankful that we chose a safe car like the BMW 2 series.
She was driving home yesterday around 3 in the afternoon, and I had just gotten off the phone with her. I had been at the Keenland Concourse, the largest car show of the year around here, and we were both in great moods ready to enjoy our Saturday night. Within minutes of hanging up she called back and told me that she had crashed the car. Of course as you can imagine my mind started racing and imagining the worse case scenarios, but luckily she told me that she was fine, just a little shaken up, and that the guy that hit her was being nice and cooperative. I told her to call the police, and I jumped in my car and headed her way.
When I arrived I was very surprised to see the disparity in damage between the two vehicles. Although the damage to the 2er is pretty bad, the worst we have ever had in a crash, the truck looks much worse. My guess is that the truck will the totaled. The police arrived shortly thereafter, and my wife and I sat in the car and discussed the preceding events while the officer wrote up a report. My wife explained that the man in the truck was weaving through traffic and following her too close (to the point that she couldn't even see his bumper in her rear view mirror), and when they came upon traffic that was backed up he was unable to stop as quickly as her thus the collision. He could have of course driven around her onto the shoulder, which it appears that he did attempt to do, albeit a bit too late. I was of course very angry at the man, but thankfully he was being cooperative and courteous, so I did the same.
After about twenty minutes the officer handed us the report and explained how to move forward and we were on our way home. All in all everything went smoothly and worked out about as good as possible for what it was. I am just very thankful that my wife is ok, that we have an M235i, and that it's a lease! I am hoping we can get a decent rental car. I would love to get a new body Mustang!
I will post a few pictures of the accident below. My questions are as follows:
1. Do you guys think that I can turn this into somewhat of a positive situation like maybe getting the M performance diffuser/rear bumper (not sure what it's called) installed or any other "upgraded" parts?
2. The exhaust tip seems to be bent just slightly down and away from the impact. Do you think they will replace the entire exhaust? I am hoping to get the M performance exhaust if so! The tip is also scratched up, but I realize this piece can be replaced alone easily.
3. How much do you think the damage will be $$$ wise? I think it may actually be over $10k, but lets see who can get the closest down to the penny!
Oh, one other thing I forgot to mention above. The wife had actually parked her car in the garage Friday when she got home from work with the rear end about a foot outside of the garage and closed the garage door on the RW Carbon carbon fiber spoiler. Surprisingly so it actually did no damage to the spoiler what so ever, and actually broke the spoiler away from the bumper on each end. I was very surprised at how strong the RW Carbon spoiler was (big :thumbsup::thumsup::thumbsup: to them) as our garage door is pretty heavy and it actually broke the 3m double sided tape away rather than the spoiler. When we had installed the spoiler about a month back we made sure to do all the necessary prep work and also did a great job of applying the 3m tape on both sides of the spoiler the same way the OEM one comes. Anyway, that is why it is not in the picture, and thankfully it wasn't on as it may have been damaged in the accident.
Anyway, enough rambling, here are the pictures. Huge, huge :cool!::thumsup::thumbsup::party0030::bow: to BMW for engineering not only great driving cars, but SAFE cars that we can trust with our loved ones behind the wheel. This is an aspect of our cars that we may not think about often, but these cars are just as safe as they are fun to drive and look at. My wife was completely stopped, and it is our guess that the man in the truck was going anywhere from 35-45 MPH when he hit her.
Picture with my M3 keeping watch. As you can see the truck sustained much greated damage.
