A new rattle?

I've read a lot of threads (some with great DIY hints and advice) about rattles in the 3 and 4 series BMW's, but not one that relates to the one in my car.

I took delivery of my 428i Coupe in April of this year and it's been great apart from a few minor glitches. The most frustrating of these is a high-pitched, tinkly, buzzy rattle that I only ever notice on quite rough roads, including some stretches of coarse-surfaced bitumen, where it's there continually.:(

We live in a semi-rural area with 600 metres of rough road from our place to the corner. For the past 7 months I have driven that 600 metres feeling every surface, switch and panel on the car interior within reach, trying to find the source of the rattle and it's been totally frustrating. I expected light pressure in the right spot would identify the culprit.

I haven't been back to the dealer as I couldn't replicate it on smooth city roads or any road within reasonable distance from the dealership. I can hear it on minor bumps on smooth roads but I've become very attuned to it.

Tonight, I got Mrs M to drive up and down that rough stretch of road in front of our place while I did an exhaustive search. And I think I found it! Firm pressure on the "headliner control module" (which is the plastic panel between the sunroof and the rear vision mirror housing the interior lights, sunroof switches, alarm interior movement sensors etc) seemed to noticeably change the rattle, making it much quieter.

So, it seems it's not as superficial as it sounds and fixing it will probably involve removing the headliner control module, looking for any components in or behind it that could be causing the rattle and applying foam tape or similar to stop it.

I can't find anything on the internet about how to remove this unit and it doesn't look intuitive to me. i'd take it to the dealer, but I expect they wouldn't bother doing anything if I can't demonstrate the rattle/buzz to them.

But I want it fixed and will do anything it takes to achieve that.

Has anyone else come across this particular source of unwanted cabin noise? Anyone with any knowledge about the removal process?

I'd be extremely grateful for any advice.
