The 2014 Engine of the Year Awards have just been announced in Stuttgart, Germany today and taking home the prize for best engine in the 2.5-Liter to 3-Liter category is the BMW N55 twin-power turbo 6-cylinder engine. BMW six-cylinder designs have picked up this trophy nine times in the last 10 years, and 13 times overall.
This engine is currently used in nearly all models across BMW's range - the BMW 135i, 640i, 740i (320ps), 235i (326ps), 335i, 435i, Z4 35i, 535i, X3 35i, X5 35i, and X6 35i (306ps)).
The power of this 3.0 twin power turbo is all you need for a very fast car, enthused Spanish judge Arturo de Andrés. Besides that, you also have the wonderful sound of a six-cylinder as well as exceptional driveability. Jason Cammisa from Automobile Magazine was one of many judges to be impressed: BMWs straight six as a petrol or diesel, conventional or hybrid, connected to a manual, DCT, or automatic, is simply the best, most refined powertrain most of us will ever experience.
