I think I am probably the first person in the forum (or maybe even in the world) who owned all these cars (E90 M3 ZCP DCT, F10 M5 ZCP DCT, and F80 M3 DCT) back to back. I now put just a little over 200 miles on my M3 and here are my thoughts:
Appearance :
M3 has such an aggressive and masculine look, it's hard to explain it. I have a photography background and because of the proportions and the angle of most body parts, it's extremely hard to take an accurate picture of this car that would represent how it looks in real life. You would most likely have to use a 200 or 300mm lens on a full frame camera, wide open, and stand 50-100 ft from the car and then maybe only pictures would do justice.
The wheel arches, especially at the back, are just so pronounced, so well done, hats off to BMW.
Carbon fiber roof is a must. It just looks gorgeous.
Anyways, we can probably spend 3 hours explaining how the car looks but I'm sure that's not why you are reading this;)
vs E90 M3
The old M3 is probably one of the best looking cars. But I'll be honest with you, and I hate to say this and I thought I'd never say this, the F80 looks better. Without a doubt.
vs F10 M5
Not much to say here. One of the areas I hated about the M5 was that it was such an understated car from a looks perspective and it is probably worst out of all 3.
Sound :
Forget about youtube. Just forget it. No but look here, look at me, I mean that, forget it:clap: Those videos don't do this car justice. The car sounds so good. I mean so good. It has a huge race car character, it sounds mad to be honest with you I think that's the word I'm looking for. Past 3000 rpm, it's immense.
vs E90 M3
I was one of those people who said "Once a V8, always a V8". Nope, not anymore. Trust me. It sounds different yes, but not bad different, it's good different. The idle note of the exhaust is beautiful. You can hear it from 50 ft away.
vs F10 M5
Now I have a lot to say about this one. Or more about the synthetic cabin noise. In M5, there is almost no road noise. There is no engine noise. You just hear the exhaust and the fake noise from speakers. Unfortunately, because the cabin is so well isolated, the fake sound is very obvious. It just sounds, well, fake. In the M3, because you hear every bit of wind noise and bump and the engine noise and the turbos spooling, you just don't realize that the noise is fake. I honestly swear that if I didn't know that M3 had fake sound, I would never be able to tell. M5 is a whole other story.
Comfort :
One problem I have regarding this car is the wind noise. It's a lot. It's probably the worst of all 3 and it's worse than the old M3, by a good margin. I don't know how something that was so bad could get worse, but it did. Go past 80 mph and it feels like you are riding a motorbike. But who cares, I could care less.
vs E90 M3
My old car was competition package. The ride in the competition package compared to this car was terrible. Terrible. The entire car would rattle and creak and feel every little bump. The wind noise however was handled better. I think I'm done getting competition package. It just makes the ride so uncomfortable. I think the regular suspension on this car is perfect. Comfort is really comfortable with wife and kids and sport+ more than enough.
vs F10 M5
Obviously this is one area where M5 is going to come on top. I'll say it this much, doing 125-130 mph in the M5, you get the same amount of wind noise in the M3 around 80 mph. But M5 is made for luxury and it is doing its job.
Performance :
Car is amazing guys. I mean it is so quick, there is so much grip. You can't just put it all in words here, it's unbelievable. There is some minor turbo lag, but I am only mentioning it because well, if I said there is no lag, I'd be lying. But the turbo lag compared to the M5 is handled a ton better. If you know what you are doing with this car, the lag is really not a problem. The car corners so well, the shift speed is pretty fast too.
vs E90 M3 :
No contest guys, sorry. It's not even a close race.
vs F10 M5 :
The 1st and 2nd gears of the M5 is utterly useless. The car has so much power and it's so heavy, you just cannot properly put that power down to the rear wheels at those torque numbers. That being said, the kickback is a lot less in the M5 initially, but once you reach 5000 rpm, it feels like it's pulling more. BUT, because I haven't broken in my engine yet, I never took the M3 above 5000 rpm yet, so I don't know how it will feel like.. Turbo lag is much more pronounced in the M5 than it is in the M3.
Mileage :
I drove about 35 miles in highway today, and I consistently got 32 mpg. In city, I can easily get 17-18 with S3 driving, and if I do D1 and efficient, it's in 20s. The car rocks guys, it gets ridiculous mileage.
vs E90 M3
I would get the advertised EPA figures for this car, which was 14/20 consistently if I drove in grandma mode. If I drove the car properly, they'd drop to 11/17.
vs F10 M5
This car was ridiculous in this aspect. I never got the advertised EPA numbers, regardless of how I drove the car, even when I turned off the radio or A/C. I never saw above 19mpg in highway and in city, I could easily go all the way down to 10mpg.
Cliff notes :
* Traction control in the M3 is fairly aggressive. It cuts the power down right away. It's like they made it that way to protect people. MDM is a bit better, not so much (possibly there is room for improvement here for the ZCP, it's expected). But you gotta turn the DSC off if you want to properly launch the car.
* The comfort mode in this car is very similar to somewhere between comfort and sport in M5. The sport+ is extremely stiff, I'd say it's definitely more than the sport+ in M5, but not as bad as the sport+ in E90 M3 ZCP.
* The heads up display is crisper, brighter than the M5. Definitely a newer unit.
* I-drive software (or hardware) is better in the M3. It's faster to navigate between menus and zoom in. Could be due to smaller screen, I'm not sure.
* One thing I quite like about the M3, if I have M view in HUD and I also have an address in navigation, the dashboard shows me the directions if the HUD is just M view. In the M5, that's not the case. If the HUD is M view, that's it. You can't see navigation anywhere else.
* The turbo spool sound is kind of cool. It gives you the feeling that you are turning on the "mad mode" of the car. I love it.
* Folded mirrors don't really fold that much. Not as much as either the old M3 or the M5.
* There is so much leg room in the back. So much! As I posted in another thread, behind my seat (and I'm 6'0"), there is enough room for me to sit AND another person to be standing up in front of me. Ridiculous!
