So what are "efficient grip" tires?

I washed by X1 for the first time this afternoon and looked at the tires closely first the first time. Mine come with Goodyear Efficient Grip tires, which I had never heard of before.



For some reason I thought that with the M Sport package that there would be some half-decent performance rubber on the car but a quick check on Tirerack quickly put that idea to bed. I quote: "...are for drivers who want a combination of sophisticated appearance, competent handling". I assume that "competent handling" means that they're pretty crappy.
