I am writing this review with only one week left with my 2009 328i, jet black, saddle brown Dakota, premium pkg, manual transmission. I will be sad to let go of this car, which was my first BMW. I'm upgrading to an 2015 X5d to accommodate a growing family.
I will start by saying this was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Over the past 5 years I have put just shy of 250,000kms (120k miles). From day one this vehicle was a rock. I heard many complaints before I purchased about run flat tires and honestly I haven't had any issues with them whatsoever. My vehicle same with 225/45/r17 conti's. About 80% of my driving was on major highways and that certainly contributed to the number of kms I got out of them but my first pair made it to 120,000 kms....yes you read that right. The dealer told me it wasn't even necessary to change them yet but I was being a bit proactive. I've heard of people getting less than 60,000kms on thei rft's but that was far from the case here. As for ride quality I had no issue. I used non rft's in the winter and didn't really notice much difference at all, and I'm pretty particular about the type off thing.
Given the high amount of highway driving I averaged abouut 8.2-8.4 l/100kms over the past 5 years. I think that comes out around 27-28 mpg but I could be a touch off. Very good numbers I believe. I definitely don't have a heavy foot but am not light on gas either.
Around 50,000kms I had to replace a rear taillight assembly. Despite purchasing an extended warranty through 160,000kms that was the only warranty work. At 170,000k I noticed what I thought was my clutch slipping and assumed it needed to be replaced. Turned out to be an ignition coil, a much cheaper fix. Other than basic maintenance and brakes that is the only repairs I had.
For the most part I kept up with the basic maintenance schedule but skipped out on a few things like delaying the transmission and brake fluid flushes. They were done but not as early as the dealer recommended. I did, however, do oil changes much more often. It was recommended they be done every 24,000kms or once per year but that seemed insane to me. I initially did them every 10,000 and then moved it to every 12,000. Whether it had any effect I don't know but given the lack of engine trouble it certainly didn't hurt.
The vehicle hasn't developed a single rattle, squeak, nothing. The overall my experience with the fit and finish has been nothing but positive.
You can likely tell by now that this vehicle really was solid. It only gets better. Given the high number of highway miles I didn't have to replace my brakes and rotors until 198,000kms!!! The dealer told me they we're still fine but I had begun to get some pulsing, especially noticeable when braking at highway speeds. I think the brakes lasted that long because I downshift religiously. I always hear mixed opinions on downshifting but it did the trick for me. I'm still on the original clutch with no issues whatsoever. I've been told that most clutches on the 328i should last about 100,000kms but maybe I've just been lucky.
I really hope my next BMW is as reliable as my first. I haven't come across many experiences like mine so I thought I would share to let you know their are extremely reliable bmws out there.
About the only regret I had was not having a little more power. When you step on it it just felt like it was Lacking a little horsepower. When I purchased I couldn't afford the 335. In some ways I wish I had of gone with it as the money wouldn't be an issue now although I suspect my reliability wouldn't have been as good with the 335. I read a ton of horror stories about the hpfp problems a few years ago and am glad I dodged them. I also wish I had of applied a clear bra to the front bumper as it took a bit of a beating over the years from all the salt and sand on the roads here in the gta over the winter months.
