I have been looking for cars (specifically bmw) for a while now but the 1 series has recently caught my eye. In my opinion they look a lot nicer while also being more rare than the normal 335 and also delivering the same power. I know that the n54 which from reading around tends to be more tunable than the n55 and n54s were produced from 2008-2010 and thats basically all i know about the 1 series.
So starting out i want a n54 so 2008-2010. I love the fact that if you want to these cars can safely make 400+ whp pretty easily. Also since the n54 was featured in the 1m it clearly is a great engine. I also like how with a simple plug and play tune they can produce lots more power. Where i get a little lost though is the transmission. I was mainly biased towards manual but was having second thoughts because i felt like it would regret while driving around town. My main concern though with a automatic is how it would handle power once i modified the car to produce lots more hp. I think i read somewhere that the newer 1 series got a DCT that was a lot better but i don't know for sure. For performance reasons is is always better to go for the manual on the 2008-2010 cars or are they both about equal? Usually i would always say manual but if the automatics were good and they have paddle shifting i wouldn't mind to have one. One last question is how do these cars hold up over time? When do things start to break and if so what parts are these cars known for breaking?
