Should I run my skinny winters in NC?

I just moved from Iowa (lots of snow) to western North Carolina (very little snow) and I'm wondering if I should be running my winters now that the temps are dropping.

My current winters are WS70 Blizzak 205/55/16. I got them that skinny because I wanted to be able to cut through deep snow, and they worked fantastic. However, now that I'm located in a warmer climate with significantly less snow, I'm wondering if they are still a good choice.

Right now I've got the OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE050A RFTs (255/45/17, 255/40/17) on the car, but I really hate the tires and will probably replace them with Conti DW's (same size).

Do you guys think it's fine to run such skinny tires in the winter when I won't be encountering snow, or should I run a summer tire? I'm not really interested in spending the cash to get wider winters right now.
