Choosing insurer

Not easy to compare quotes at a glance due to inclusions and exclusions. But thought I would share my shopping around for inf of others. Any suggestions also welcome.

Quotes are for couple in early sixties, living Surrey, car kept on drive. No sins or claims to report over 5 year period (except windscreen 4 years ago, and see Admiral). Generally gone for £500 excess, courtesy car, protected no claims - but that can mean quite different things. No legal cover if an option. No business or commuting. Estimated 13000 miles a year. Have 14 years no claims entitlement, partly due to previous protection. Done by phone; I find these quotes just too laborious to do on line.*

CURRENT - e91 335d SE. MORE THAN. £362. Stayed with them for a while, not least because of a triple guarantee - no loss of NCB, no increase in premium, and no refusal of cover due to claims. This guarantee is not available to new clients.

NEW - F31 335d xd Lux, with £10000 of options.

1. MORE THAN. £585 with excess increased to £750. Pay £2 a day for European cover beyond 7 days.

2. LV. With CSMA discount of 10%, £373 to include 180 days of European cover. No need to inform them of winter wheels/tyres.

3. First Direct. £800 including European cover of up to 60 days per trip.

4. Direct Line. £392. European cover at £80 per 31 days.

5. Admiral. The only one to ask for list of options. The only one to ask about "awareness" courses, one of which I needed to acknowledge. £586.

6. John Lewis. Slow. I think I had the trainee. £418.

7. A Plan. I chased after 24 hours. It became clear that, in absence of a tracker, they could not get within £100 of best quote.

8. BMW. £446 without courtesy car, without no claims protection.

9. Chris Knott. After selecting "new quote" option I gave up after a wait of about 5 minutes.

So subject to persuasive new suggestions, the clear winner is no. 2, LV. It is also one of those here which is a Which recommended insurer

*PS Got worried that had not tried a comparison site. Tried three. Reg no. Not yet on DVLA so had to select model details. None offered a 335d, except for GT. Game over.
